To be eligible to apply for the Sumner Ferrymead Scholarships, applicants need to have resided in the Sumner/Ferrymead catchment (see website for description of catchment area https://sumnerferrymeadfoundation.co.nz/about-us.php ) during the last 3 years of secondary school.

The scholarships are available for Māori master’s and doctoral students, and the community writers awards are available for Māori community writers. The value of the awards are between $5,000 and $10,000. The He Pounga Waihoe awards are aimed at those studying and/or writing in the area of drawing on traditional knowledge to address intergenerational health and well-being.

Education grants are provided by the Onuku Māori Lands Trust for those studying full-time or part-time at a tertiary institute or university who are an owner or direct descendant of a current owner of the Onuku Maori Trust or a beneficiary of a whanau trust.

International science and innovation connectivity provides an opportunity to drive increasing excellence and the potential for impact of New Zealand science. The Catalyst Fund supports activities that initiate, develop and foster collaborations leveraging international science and innovation for New Zealand’s benefit. Taking a multi-institutional approach is an important element of creating benefit for New Zealand and meeting the aims of the Catalyst Fund. The Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia (PMSA) and Latin America (PMSLA) are funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand Manapou kit e Ao (ENZ). The scholarships are flexible, and offer funding to support short or long term programmes including study abroad/exchange, internships, postgraduate study, and language programmes.
Currently enrolled students who are interested in taking part in a group programme should contact their education provider’s international office to check if there are opportunities available.
Closes 21 April | Undergraduate | Postgraduate
The bursary has a total of $8,000 available for up to four recipients with consideration given based on meeting the criteria and their iwi/hapū connection to the region.
To be eligible, students should be studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level, either internally or extramurally, in a field relevant to Horizons work. Relevant areas include; resource management, environmental planning, environmental engineering and modelling with particular emphasis on river and drainage basin dynamics.
Applicants must be from the Horizons region (although they may study outside of it) and be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident

Applicants must be in their 2nd or subsequent year of their current programme of study. The Board will only recognise those applicants (including legally adopted children) who are Ngati Whakaue descendant of one of the original owners in Pukeroa Oruawhata Block OR descendant of one or more of the 6 Koromatua o Ngati Whakaue.

The Waikato Medical Research Foundation exists to support and encourage research within the Waikato region and to assist in the publication of the results of this research. The Foundation invites research proposals that are related to health and medical topics.
The Grants Committee pays close attention to such matters as:
- Aims of the research
- Methodology and research design used
- Sampling methods, size and statistical methods
- Contribution to knowledge
- Māori health advancement and responsiveness
- Research impact in the Waikato region
The Foundation awards grants that contribute to the overall costs of the research project but do not fund overheads nor profit. Grant applications of up to $30,000 are welcomed.

The Aotearoa New Zealand Tāwhia te Mana Research Fellowships are a major investment in our research workforce. They will better support our exceptional researchers at various stages in their research careers, building cohorts of talented future research leaders.
The new fellowships are designed to address issues raised by the sector, including career stability, collaboration, mobility, and better representation in the workforce. Key features include:
- more and higher value awards
- a new organisational support component for early and mid career Fellows
- increased duration for early career Fellows
- a streamlined application process
- dedicated awards for Māori, Pacific peoples and women.
Aotearoa New Zealand Tāwhia te Mana Research Fellowships will support around 30 new Fellows per year, as the pool of funding available for general research fellowships has increased to $27.38 million.
The Māori name of the fellowships, Tāwhia te Mana, is inspired by the MBIE’s mission to grow Aotearoa New Zealand for all, and the names for individual schemes reflect the growing capability of Fellows as future research leaders. Mana Tūāpapa refers to building the foundations of one’s reputation, Mana Tūānuku to building an established and expansive reputation and Mana Tūārangi to building a reputation that extends far beyond one’s own career span.

The Waikato Graduate Women Educational Trust, Te Ohu Tuku Tohu o ngā Raukura Wāhine Mātauranga o Waikato, offers awards and scholarships to women students and staff at Waikato and Bay of Plenty tertiary institutions.
Some awards are available to women in tertiary institutions throughout the region while others are available only to students from a particular institution.
Dame Jocelyn Fish Award
Available to women students at Bethlehem Tertiary Institute, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, the University of Waikato, and the Waikato Institute of Technology, who are studying in a non-traditional field for women.
Dr Vivienne Cassie-Cooper Award
Available to women returning to full-time or part-time study at at Bethlehem Tertiary Institute, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, the University of Waikato, and the Waikato Institute of Technology.
Doctoral Study Merit Award
Available to women students enrolled full-time for a PhD at the University of Waikato and whose doctoral enrolment has been confirmed within 12 months prior to the closing date.
Masters Study Award
Available to women students, who are enrolled full-time or part-time at the University of Waikato for a thesis worth at least 90 points towards a Masters degree.
