I received the Te Paewai O te Rangi scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement upon leaving high school. Growing up in the Matamata-Piako District, I always aspired to involve myself in the community and had a passion for working with animals and the environments they lived in. By majoring in Ecology and Biodiversity with a minor in Animal Behaviour, I am getting step closer to achieving my dream of making a positive impact on a whole range of animals and inspiring others to care for all flora and fauna.
The highlight of my journey to date has been the opportunity to help train dogs at the Canine Scent Detection Research at the University as part of my work placement. This team do amazing things like training dogs to detect lung cancer and invasive fish! I have also really enjoyed being a Student Ambassador and being part of clubs such as Science Box (teaching kids science), the Waikato International Students’ Association (WISA) and becoming a member of Golden Key International Honour Society.
My journey so far has solidified my passion to work with animals in their natural environments. At this stage I’m considering pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Waikato, veterinary studies or working in a zoo.
Remember to do what you love and to always believe in yourself. There are no mistakes in life, only lessons to learn. Follow your passions because we all have the potential to create the phenomenal life I believe we all deserve.
