Through a structured reading programme and practical directing exercises, the paper obliges a close study of the many factors which influence the creation of a theatre performance. The paper also explores the development of the role of the director by studying the works of major directors and theatre practice theorists over a range of periods and theatre cultures but principally focusing on those from the 20th century.
