This paper begins with a survey of research carried out in several different countries on women's and girls' education since the 1970s. The theoretical underpinnings of this research will be compared and contrasted. We will then explore recent developments in the field with a two-fold emphasis - on education policies, and on sexuality/the body. The paper focuses on differences amongst women and girls, such as race/culture, social class, sexuality and geographical location.
