This paper is taught predominantly within the context of the resource consent process under the Resource Management Act 1991. The activities involved in evaluating resource consent applications and setting and monitoring resource consent conditions will be used as the example of how environmental evaluation is undertaken within New Zealand. This will provide students with an insight into the operation of the current resource consent process and the relationship between science and planning which will be valuable for people who go on to develop careers in both planning and environmental science applications.
