The aim of this paper is to enable students to gain a basic understanding of principles and techniques for language assessment and to evaluate the effectiveness of second and foreign language teaching and learning. By the end of the paper, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of key concepts of language ability assessment, different methods of language ability assessment, and issues associated with assessment and evaluation techniques.
