Tutor development

At Te Puna Ako Centre for Tertiary Teaching and Learning, we provide training, resources, and support to casual or part-time tutors, demonstrators and sessional assistants.

Introduction to Tutoring Programme

Are you new to casual tutoring at the University of Waikato? Have you tutored before, but would like a refresher? If so, join us for our self-paced tutoring programme. We have five self-paced modules available.

The online modules are accessible in the Tutor Training Moodle and consist of:

  1. Module 1: The Professional Sessional
  2. Module 2: Planning a session
  3. Module 3: Classroom Strategies
  4. Module 4: Feedback and marking
  5. Module 5: Growth and support

If you are a new tutor, and you complete the Modules or participate in the introductory workshops, you can claim paid time. We suggest you allow around 2.5 hours to complete the modules.

You can also register for our Tutoring Mailing List to hear about workshops and events throughout the year.

Face-to-Face Q&A sessions

As well as our online materials, we also arrange face-to-face Q&A sessions around the start of each trimester. The informal sessions allow you to meet other sessional tutors and ask experienced tutors about their tips and tricks.

Our next Q and A session will be held soon. Please email brendan.sheridan@waikato.ac.nz (Hamilton campus) or

alison.jolley@waikato.ac.nz (Tauranga campus)
