General Practice Clinic
Located in Kirikiriroa - Hamilton, the General Practice team at Student Health provides a full range of medical and nursing services on campus.
Students have access to a range of health and wellbeing services provided on and near Hamilton campus.
Located by the Gate 1 carpark, our Student Health Service offers services to all current UoW students.
You can book for Hamilton campus health services via the MyIndici phone app or online.
Our General Practice clinic provides comprehensive medical care exclusively to university students. We offer appointments with doctors and Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Prescribers, Practice Nurses, and Healthcare Assistant.
We operate on an appointment-only basis. To book an appointment, call us at (07) 838 4037 or book online through our patient portal if you're signed up. For urgent concerns, students can request to speak with a nurse who will call you back to assess your situation and determine whether a same-day urgent appointment is necessary or if further medical advice can be provided.
- A routine doctor’s appointment is for 15-minutes. If you have multiple concerns, a complex issue, or a mental health concern, call us to request a longer appointment at no extra cost to ensure you have enough time with your clinician.
- You may see a Nurse Practitioner (NP) instead of a GP when booking your appointment. Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses who have advanced education and clinical training to diagnose and treat medical conditions.
- Book in to see a Registered Nurse Prescribers who are designated to prescribe from a limited list of medicines to treat common conditions such as coughs & colds, throat or ear infections, diabetes, asthma, hayfever, skin conditions like acne/eczema, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STI), contraception.
Our team of Practice Nurses are available for health advice, sexual health checks, cervical screening, vaccines, injections, wart treatment, wound care, accidents and more.
You can ask for a phone or video consultation if that is more convenient. It is recommended to have had at least one in-person appointment with your clinician here at Student Health previously.
There are limitations with telehealth such as not being able to carry out a physical examination. We take your health seriously so if your concern cannot be dealt with safely through telehealth, we will ask you to come in for an in-person consultation or seek medical attention locally.
Tips to make the best of your telehealth appointment
- choose a quiet private place with good lighting where you won’t be disturbed
- take a few minutes to get ready for your telehealth appointment
- check your device is charged and connected to the internet - wifi is best
- Repeat prescriptions are available and free for registered patients only. Requests can be made online via the portal or by calling us.
- Repeat prescriptions are provided at the discretion of our clinicians. Non-urgent requests will be processed within 3 working days.
- You can request a repeat prescription when your medication has been previously prescribed by one of our clinicians here at Student Health.
- For urgent requests, it’s best to call us and ask to speak to a nurse. You may be provided with a short-term prescription until you can attend a review appointment with your usual prescriber within the next 7 to 14 days.
- You can book an appointment at Student Health if you want to apply for Special Consideration for an external exam due to either medical or compassionate circumstances as per the University’s process for Special Consideration for Impaired Performance or Missed Examination.
- Phone the clinic (07) 838 4037 and ask to book an appointment within 5 working days of your affected exam date. If you are unwell or cannot wait for a routine appointment, please ask to speak to one of our nurses who will arrange an urgent appointment if necessary.
- Following your consultation, your clinician will complete and provide you with the required Section B form either in-person or electronically as soon as practicable. You are responsible for applying for special consideration online via the MyWaikato portal.

Our patient portal is MyIndici and is available to students who are enrolled with the General Practice as a patient. It is a secure online service that allows you access your health information and communicate with your health professional.
How do I access the portal?
- Ask to sign up by calling reception or email medcent@waikato.ac.nz. You will be sent an activation code.
- Log in to MyIndici from either the mobile app or an internet browser by visiting the website.
By signing up to the portal you gain access to the following online services
- book or cancel appointments
- request repeat prescriptions
- access your health information i.e.test results and medications
- communicate with your doctor/nurse via email with non-urgent messages
- check and pay your account balance
Important
Do not use MyIndici to send urgent messages or request urgent prescriptions. Call Student Health on (07) 838 4037 and ask to speak to a nurse.
Students planning to travel are encouraged to consult a doctor at least two months before their departure. To arrange this, call the clinic to book a 30-minute appointment. Please note that payment for travel vaccinations is required before they can be ordered.
The implant/Jadelle and intrauterine systems or devices (IUS/IUD), Mirena, Jaydess or copper IUD are the more effective methods of contraception.
Some of our GPs are able to insert and remove these for FREE for NZ residents enroled with Student Health.
