The Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) has announced funding for two research projects at the University of Waikato.
Dr Chunhuan Lao has received a Health Delivery Research Career Development Award for her project examining whether regular use of multiple medications (polypharmacy) has effects on the systemic treatment of breast cancer and its outcomes.
This two-year project aims to provide clinicians crucial evidence to support treatment planning for breast cancer patients who have comorbidities, potentially leading to improved patient care and outcomes.
Mr Stefan Heinz has been awarded a Health Delivery Research Activation Grant for his work to create a resilience index tool that integrates World Health Organisation and other research.
This development will take place over 18 months and result in a prototype machine learning model that includes community-level elements in its assessment of resilience, leading to data that helps shape the planning and delivery of community interventions.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Gary Wilson, says the funding is an important part of the University of Waikato’s growing impact in health research, as it builds a solid research foundation for its growing health offerings.
“These successful projects are excellent examples of work we are doing that has tangible outcomes for people’s health and wellbeing, both in New Zealand and globally.”
