Prominent commercial disputes specialist and Tompkins Wake Partner James MacGillivray has been awarded the University of Waikato Medal in recognition of his longstanding commitment to the University and the broader Waikato community.
University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley highlighted Mr MacGillivray’s significant contributions to the University, both within and beyond his expertise in law.

Mr MacGillivray’s connection with the University began through his involvement with WaikatoLink, the University’s research commercialisation arm. As a board member since 2011 and Chair from 2012 to 2023, James led WaikatoLink through a period of growth, integrating research commercialisation activities and establishing KiwiNet, a national entity that has reshaped the landscape of university commercialisation both in New Zealand and abroad. His skillful negotiations with international stakeholders brought vital benefits to the University’s research community.
Mr MacGillivray extended his impact within the academic sphere, serving as a part-time lecturer in Te Piringa Faculty of Law, where he shared his extensive legal knowledge and expertise with future legal practitioners.
