A recent visit from the University of Newcastle in Australia has led to closer ties with the University of Waikato.
Taking the opportunity to explore opportunities to strengthen the relationship, which began with a Student Exchange Agreement in 2020, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Vice Chancellors of the two universities yesterday.
University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Quigley says there are many synergies between the two universities. “We look forward to exploring opportunities to work more closely together and increasing our research capabilities and engagement with teaching and learning development,” Professor Quigley says.
The two tertiary providers have a number of research commonalities, particularly across the indigenous studies, social sciences and engineering disciplines. The MoU will allow the universities to increase engagement across research, teaching and student initiatives. There is also a lot of interest in cementing sporting ties between the rugby-rich regions.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said the visit to University of Waikato was an excellent opportunity to strengthen the partnership between the two universities.
“We have very much enjoyed our visit to the University of Waikato. We thank our colleagues at Waikato for their warm welcome and excellent discussions. We look forward to engaging more and building a broad partnership in areas of mutual interest. We share similar interests across our student and research programs. The signing of our MoU will offer even more opportunities for our universities to work together for the benefit of our students, staff and communities.”
