The Waikato Branch is hosting the biennial New Zealand Geographical Society Conference from 20 – 22 November 2024 at the University of Waikato campus in Tauranga Moana.

Flows and filtrations occur across place, people and geographical knowledge. The conference – held in Tauranga Moana - focuses on fluid geographies from three interrelated viewpoints.

First, the theme acknowledges the importance of watery Aotearoa – ocean, coastlines, rivers, lakes – as we become wetter and wilder due to climate change weather related events.

Second, fluid geographies as a theme acknowledges that people and places are always in flux: socially; environmentally; politically; and, physically. Change, renewal, seeking equity and movement are part of everyday life.

Third, the theme invites critical thinking about geographical knowledge as beyond fixed, bordered and linear understandings of place, location and time.
