Australian, London-based pianist Piers Lane returns to New Zealand to perform the complete cycle of Frédéric Chopin’s beloved nocturnes.
The 21 nocturnes are among Chopin’s most intimate compositions, suggestive of a myriad of nighttime atmospheres and emotions. Of twilight, dusk and into the dark night. Of contemplation, serenity, melancholy, drama, and joy. They are each elegantly drawn and sensuously beautiful. The first nocturne was composed when Chopin was 17, and with the final nocturne being composed just three years before his death at age 39, additional associative emotions can be imagined.
No praise could be high enough for Piers Lane whose playing throughout is of a superb musical intelligence, sensitivity, and scintillating brilliance.
