Omar A. Sheriff

Omar Sharif, from Chennai, India, chose the University of Waikato for his Master of Cyber Security, drawn by the strong reputation of research group Cybersecurity Researchers of Waikato (CROW).

The international student’s journey at Waikato not only prepared him for a successful career but also provided a welcoming environment for him to practise his religion.

The University’s hands-on, research-driven learning experience was important for Omar, who developed a deeper understanding of cyber security. 

Courses covering topics such as malware analysis and penetration testing equipped him with essential skills for the industry, while papers on foundational IT helped him resolve real-world issues. 

These skills are now integral to his role as a Cyber Security Analyst at Te Whatu Ora, the primary publicly funded healthcare system of New Zealand, where he monitors and mitigates security breaches and threats.

Living on campus at Waikato was also a highlight of Omar’s student experience. The campus offered prayer rooms making it easy for him to practise his religion without any challenges. 

The inclusive atmosphere gave him the opportunity to connect with peers from diverse backgrounds, helping him build a strong network and transition into life in New Zealand. 

Outside of academics, he engaged in social activities, like playing volleyball with friends and participating in his local community, all of which contributed to a fulfilling university life.

When asked his advice for other students, Omar says, “If you constantly try and keep putting in the effort there is a high chance you will succeed. Build a social life to help you keep you busy.”

Omar’s experience highlights the University’s commitment to inclusivity, providing a supportive environment not just academically but also culturally and religiously.
