Jianhao Zhou

Originally from Guangzhou, China, Jianhao Zhou moved to New Zealand when he was 15.

Known as Jacky, he attended Hamilton Boys High School, before enrolling in Waikato University to do a Bachelor of Computer Science degree.

“I looked at other universities, but chose Waikato because it is friendly and not too big,” says Jacky. “I felt that other universities were too busy.”

The friendly campus, helpful teachers and diverse student population made it an easy decision.

“Waikato is pretty good. The lecturers are helpful and the people are friendly."

Currently in his first year of study, Jacky says studying computer science at university was a natural progression from his high school interests.

“I enjoyed calculus and problem solving in high school, so studying computer science was a natural progression for me,” says Jacky.

“I like learning new stuff, and really enjoy computing and programming. It’s logical and step-by-step, which I am good at.“

Jacky also enjoys learning about other cultures and languages.

“I did a Japanese language paper because I’d like to learn more about Japanese culture and go there in the future.”

In the future Jacky hopes to work in computing, and eventually start his own business.

He encourages others to consider Waikato University for their tertiary study - a perfect blend of excellent teaching and study options, with a smaller, supportive and friendly campus. He feels a sense of belonging here.

“Waikato has a lot of diversity, with a lot of students from different countries, which I really like.”
