Jiabao Zhao (Boa)

Boa Jiabao Zhao is a Chinese international student who has transformed her educational journey into a successful career at a global food company in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Boa's decision to study at Waikato was influenced by the University’s reputation as the 'Harvard of the Southern Hemisphere' in China. 

Her four years on campus were filled with cultural exchanges, local exploration, and participation in many university initiatives such as free water safety training.

Boa says the University's comprehensive approach to education prepared her for her career in New Zealand. 

While studying, she developed crucial skills in English communication, business understanding, and networking. 

Her active participation in bootcamps, case study competitions, and on-campus events, along with roles as an International Student Ambassador and Residential Assistant, contributed significantly to her personal and professional growth.

“To succeed, we must be confident in ourselves, make sure to network while studying, step out of our comfort zone, and get involved in activities on campus,” she says.

“And don't forget to travel and explore this beautiful country.”

Boa particularly credits the University's Careers team members for their invaluable support in crafting her professional profile and honing her interview skills. 

Regular career workshops and one-on-one appointments played a crucial role in her job market preparation.
