Graduate Diploma in Teaching
Anthony Lander graduated his tertiary study with a Bachelor of Management Studies and then returned to the campus after ten years in the workforce to do a one year Graduate Diploma Teaching (Secondary). He was surprised to find his fellow students were a mix of ages and returning to study as an adult gave him extra insight and life experience. He found the practical aspect of the Diploma prepared him for the classroom.
"Going into a class for the first time was nerve-wracking as I thought the students would be comparing me to their current teacher. However, at the end of the teaching practicum I felt like I had learned a lot and gained valuable experience."
Anthony graduated and now enjoys being in a secondary school where he can specialise in a subject and connect with students. "You have to make sure you are up to date with current events, teaching techniques and technologies which is great if you love learning." He admits that the first few years of teaching are the hardest. "You have to be passionate about the profession. Even though it is rewarding, it is a lot of work and preparation, especially in the first few years starting out as a teacher."
"Being in the classroom with students helps me to build a relationship and give them relevant and engaging examples of subject material. There is a sense of satisfaction when they learn something new or understand a new concept."
