This paper introduces a number of the professional obligations and responsibilities of educators. These include examining the Treaty of Waitangi and designing practices to best meet the needs of Maori learners; engaging pedagogy and information and communication technologies to create responsive and interactive learning environments; and investigating strategies that align teaching practices with current literacy concepts. Teaching as inquiry is an overarching model that helps initial teacher education students examine such issues through practice, developing key capabilities for the teaching profession.
