This paper is designed to place students' practical knowledge of Spanish within a sociolinguistic framework. Students analyse different types of texts and listen to a variety of language registers and phonological modalities of Spanish. Students learn about Spanish in Spain, Spanish in the USA and Spanish in Latin America. The paper includes an introduction to the history of the Spanish language, the sound system, morphology, syntax, and register variation.
