This paper explores the role that culture, ethnicity and context play in understanding how people make meaning of their lives and the social worlds they live in. Drawing on New Zealand based research that teaching staff are engaged in, the paper will examine important conceptual frameworks and theory within social psychology and the social sciences generally. Maori perspectives and exemplars will be a significant emphasis within the paper.
