Prerequisites papers: LEGAL103 and LEGAL104
Some knowledge of international law is crucial to the study of law in New Zealand and complements the aspects of domestic legal systems and municipal law, which students will learn otherwise. This paper will introduce students to public international law including basic features of the international legal system, institutions such as the United Nations, various treaties, human rights, indigenous rights, the law of the sea and the relationship between international and domestic law. Some emphasis will be placed in local and Pacific regional human rights issues. This paper will take a comparative approach to international law, allowing students to apply what they know about New Zealand law to a wider regional and global context.
