There are two main themes covered in this paper: the principles and practice of rock mechanics, especially the rheology of intact rock and rock masses, and the strength of intact rock in compression and shear, and of rock joints in shear; and the problems and methods of engineering geology, in which case studies of classes of materials, construction projects, and distinctive environments are used as a basis for study.
