After almost 60 years as a resource for community swimmers, the University’s outdoor pool complex at its Hamilton campus will now be retired.

Established as part of the Teachers' College in the 1960s, the pool is now at the end of its life.

After it closed at the end of last summer, the University took some time to conduct a full review of the essential repairs the pool requires.

It found that significant structural work would be needed to reopen the pool for this season, which is simply not achievable. The ongoing cost for maintenance is also no longer sustainable.

“We know that this will be disappointing news for our pool users within the University and wider community, and it is not a decision we have taken lightly,” says Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Quigley.

“While it’s the end of an era, we are proud to have been able to support community access to a swimming facility for so many decades.”
