University conducting emergency system tests

Learn more about emergency response system tests happening on campus this week.

25 Sep 2024

The University of Waikato is testing emergency response systems at its Hamilton and Tauranga campuses this week.

Hamilton

1pm, Wednesday 25 September

Tauranga

1pm, Friday 27 September

On the University’s Hamilton campus in Hillcrest, an emergency siren will sound for three minutes.

On the Tauranga campus in the CBD, a PA announcement will be made alerting those on campus to the lockdown.

At each campus, access-controlled doors will automatically lock for approximately 15 minutes to simulate a lockdown scenario, however campus users will still be able to leave buildings if required.

Members of the public should not be alarmed if they hear the siren in Hamilton or become aware of the lockdown in Tauranga.

These tests are being held to ensure the University is prepared for a critical event and to evaluate emergency management and response systems.

While these are simulated tests, we encourage the community to think about what to do in any emergency scenario and when putting clocks forward for daylight savings this weekend, remember to check smoke alarms and emergency kits as well.
