The Waikato Public Law and Policy Research Unit invites you to Ms Natalie Coates' talk on “Ngā Piki me Ngā Heke: Māori Rights and the Law in Tumultuous Times”.
In this kōrero, Ms Coates will explore the significant developments in the recognition of tikanga Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi within our legal system in recent years. Whilst the judiciary takes cautious steps forward, the political landscape tells a different story, highlighting the tension between legal progress and political pushback in a time where hope and resistance must walk hand in hand.
Ms Coates is a barrister at Thorndon Chambers, specialising in public law, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori legal issues. She is a leading expert on the intersection of tikanga and the common law, having appeared in precedent-setting cases across all senior courts. A former partner at Kāhui Legal, Ms Coates holds First Class Honours degrees in Law and Māori Studies from Otago, and an LLM from Harvard University. She has taught law at the University of Auckland and is Co-President of Te Hunga Rōia Māori.
