The United Nations Pact for the Future and other global initiatives for peace, nuclear abolition and climate protection. A conversation with Alyn Ware, born in Tauranga and now based in Europe.

A Turbulent World
On January 28, 2025 the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock to 89 Seconds to Midnight, indicating the extreme risks to humanity from escalating armed conflicts, nuclear weapons policies, climate change, disruptive technologies and the rise of political disinformation. The Doomsday Clock shift is not an expression off utility in the face of overwhelming political turmoil, but rather a wake-up call to inspire global action.

UN Pact for the Future
In September 2024, governments came together at the UN Summit of the Future, putting aside their differences to forge a Pact for the Future. In this talk, Alyn will highlight key aspects of the PACT, and the roles of civil society & governments like New Zealand to ensure its implementation.

Other Hopeful Initiatives
Alyn will also discuss the current International Court of Justice case on climate change, and how this could be a gamechanger to finally ensure climate protection. And he will give examples of inspiring policies highlighted by the 2024 World Future Policy Award on Peace and Future Generations.
