Regulations for the Degree of Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL)
- The Personal Programmes of Study Regulations apply in these regulations.
Admission
- Candidates for the Degree must have either:
- satisfied the requirements the award of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline1 with at least a B grade average across the 300 level papers, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent,
or - demonstrated to the Academic Board that they have professional experience equivalent to 3-5 years fulltime work or volunteer experience in an area relevant to the degree, however advice should be sought from the Division of Education, or
- satisfied the requirements for the award of a Bachelors degree with Honours or Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Waikato with at least a B grade average, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent.
- satisfied the requirements the award of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline1 with at least a B grade average across the 300 level papers, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent,
- In exceptional circumstances, based on academic merit and relevant experience, candidates who do not meet the requirements of section 2 of these regulations may be considered for admission subject to the completion of any qualifying papers the Academic Board may prescribe which must be completed either prior to or concurrently.
Requirements for the Degree
- The normal minimum period of enrolment for completion of the Degree for candidates admitted under section 2(a) of these regulations is one calendar year or one and a half academic years. The normal minimum period of enrolment for candidates admitted under section 2(b) of these regulations is one academic year.
- Candidates must enrol in the Division of Education and follow an approved programme of study.
- Candidates admitted under sections 2(a) or 2(b) of these regulations must gain 180 points at 500 level or above. Candidates admitted under section 2(c) of these regulations must gain 120 points at 500 level or above.
- Candidates admitted under section 2(a) or section 2(b) APPLN501, APPLN564, APPLN566, and either ALPSS592, or APPLN585 and one of APPLN505, APPLN530, APPLN562, APPLN563, or APPLN565.
- Candidates admitted under section 2(c) must complete APPLN501, APPLN564, APPLN566 and APPLN585. Candidates who completed a Bachelors degree with Honours or Postgraduate Diploma in a cognate discipline may substitute APPLN564 and APPLN566 for one of APPLN505, APPLN530, APPLN562, APPLN563, APPLN565, or APPLN592, and any other paper(s).
- Candidates may take up to 30 points from outside the field of the degree.
- The field of the degree comprises the papers listed on the Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages page of the University of Waikato Subject Regulations.
- Candidates who have demonstrated relevant professional experience which includes two years teaching experience in a relevant context, as determined by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Division of Education or delegated authority, may substitute APPLN562 for papers listed for the subject on the University of Waikato Subject Regulations.
- If a candidate fails a paper or papers (worth not more than 30 points in total), they may repeat the paper or papers or take an alternative paper or papers with the same total points value on one occasion only. A candidate who fails a paper or papers worth more than 30 points in total will not be permitted to proceed with the Degree.
Award of Honours
- The Degree may be awarded with
- Distinction, or
- Merit.
- Except with the approval of the Academic Board, the award will be calculated on the basis of the grades of the papers presented for the Degree, including any failed paper.
Variations
- The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Division of Education or delegated authority may vary or waive these regulations in individual cases.

2 Relevant areas would include education, language teaching, applied linguistics, TESOL/ESOL/EFL/EAL teaching.
