Regulations for the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Accounting (PGCertPA)

  1. The Personal Programmes of Study Regulations apply in these regulations.

Admission

  1. Candidates for the Postgraduate Certificate must have:
    1. qualified for a Bachelor of Business of the University of Waikato which included the Chartered Accountancy academic requirements of CAANZ, with at least a B- grade average across their 300 level accounting papers, and the Business Ethics Subject from the CA program, or
    2. qualified for the award of a Masters of Professional Accounting of the University of Waikato, or
    3. a degree qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent.
  2. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Division or delegated authority may admit candidates who have substantially completed the requirements of a Master of Professional Accounting of the University of Waikato, or equivalent.
  3. In exceptional circumstances, candidates who are able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or scholarly experience deemed to be equivalent to the requirements of section 2 may be considered for admission subject to the completion of any qualifying papers the Academic Board may prescribe.
  4. Applicants who have completed a Master of Professional Accounting with an endorsement in Chartered Accountancy will not be admitted to the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Accounting.

Requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate

  1. The normal minimum period of enrolment for completion of the Postgraduate Certificate is one calendar year. However, due to the scheduled availability of papers it may take longer.
  2. Candidates must enrol in the Division of Management and follow an approved programme of study.
  3. Candidates must gain 60 points at 500 level, consisting of ACCTP512, ACCTP513, ACCTP514, ACCTP515, ACCTP516, ACCTP517, ACCTP518 and ACCTP519.
  4. If admitted under clause 2 of these regulations, candidates must complete their Master of Professional Accounting, or equivalent, in order to be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Accounting.
  5. If a candidate fails a paper or papers (worth not more than 30 points in total), they may repeat the paper or papers or take an alternative paper or papers with the same total points value on one occasion only. A candidate who fails a paper or papers worth more than 30 points in total will not be permitted to proceed with the Certificate.

Variations

  1. The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Division or delegated authority may vary or waive these regulations in individual cases.
