Emergencies and Fire evacuations
Fire evacuations
If you discover a fire:
- Warn people nearby and activate a fire alarm.
- Check for people in the area. If possible, close any doors between you and the fire.
- Only extinguish a fire if it is safe to do so and you are confident that know how.
- Alert the Fire Service on by calling 111 as soon as possible. Give your street address, building details and nearest intersecting street. Do not hang up until the call operator has all the information that they need.
- If the fire is uncontrollable, evacuate immediately via nearest exit.
- Do not use a lift or run.
- Go to the nearest evacuation point.
- Inform the building warden of the fire's location. If there are no wardens, please inform Security.
- Follow the instructions of all wardens and emergency services.
Responsibilities of University staff
During normal University operating hours, the appointed Building and Floor wardens deal with any building evacuations.
These evacuations are completed with the assistance of academic staff that have responsibility for evacuating their own teaching area.
After normal business hours, building evacuations/emergencies are coordinated by the UniSafe staff. The contact phone number in any emergency is +64 7 838 4444.
Your participation in these trial evacuations assists in enhancing safety in the workplace.
