Regulations for the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDipTchg)

  1. The Personal Programmes of Study Regulations apply in these regulations.

Admission

  1. Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma must have
    1. qualified for the award of a bachelors degree with at least a B grade average across the 300 level papers or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, or
    2. qualified for the award of a bachelors degree with honours with at least second class honours (second division) or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, or
    3. qualified for the award of a postgraduate diploma in a subject relevant to the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, and
    4. satisfied the prerequisites for graduate study in the subject(s) being presented, at levels considered appropriate by the Academic Board.
  2. Candidates must be selected by the Division of Education as meeting the Teaching Council’s selection criteria for Initial Teacher Education programmes including the English language requirements.
  3. In exceptional circumstances, based on academic merit and relevant experience, candidates who do not meet the requirements of the above section may be considered for admission subject to the completion of any qualifying papers the Academic Board may prescribe which must be completed either prior to or concurrent with the PGDipTchg.

Requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma

  1. The normal minimum period of enrolment for completion of the Postgraduate Diploma is one year and the requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma must be completed within two years of first enrolling in the Postgraduate Diploma for full-time enrolments and three years for part-time enrolments.
  2. Candidates must enrol in the Division of Education and follow an approved programme of study.
  3. In order to complete the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, candidates must gain 150 points in papers at 500 level, as prescribed in the Teaching entry in the University of Waikato Subject Regulations.
  4. The Postgraduate Diploma will be awarded with one of the following endorsements:

Early Childhood (PGDipTchg(ECE)
Primary (PGDipTchg(Primary))
Secondary (PGDipTchg(Secondary))

Award of Honours

  1. The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching is not awarded with Honours.

Variations

  1. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Division or delegated authority may vary or waive these regulations in individual cases.
