‘Gender in Police: An International Perspective’ by Dr Meeran Borwankar

The Waikato Public Law and Policy Research Unit is proud to present a talk by Dr Meeran Borwankar on ‘Gender in Police: An International Perspective’. Dr Borwankar will share her experiences in the Indian Police Services offering in insight into what is like to be a female police officer in a male dominated profession.

Dr Borwankar is from the 1981 batch of the Indian Police Service - Maharashtra cadre, India and has held many positions during her career spanning 36 years including:
• Chief of Prisons, Maharashtra
• Police Chief of districts in Maharashtra
• Deputy Commissioner of Police of different zones in Mumbai
• Commissioner of Police, Pune
• Chief of Crime Branch, Mumbai
• Deputy Inspector General, Central Bureau of Investigation- Economic Offensive Wing and Anti-Corruption Wing

Dr Borwankar is a Law graduate and has a doctorate in 'Organizational Management’ from the University of Pune, India. She is a Hubert H Humphrey Fellow to the University of Minnesota, USA and trained under the Executive Development Program at University of New England, Armidale, Australia. She is also the recipient of many awards including the President’s Medal for Meritorious Services and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services.

Dr Borwankar retired as Director General, Bureau of Police Research and Development, India & National Crime Records Bureau in 2017 and is currently a member of the 'Core Advisory Group on Criminal Justice System Reforms' of the National Human Rights Commission. She is on various academic boards and is the author of three books; ‘Leaves of Life’, ‘Inspector Chougule’ and ‘Madam Commissioner’. She is an active researcher and writes extensively.
